Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi

Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi is a Professor of Geography and Ex-Director of the Institute of Geography, University of the Punjab, Lahore. He is also the Ex-Director, Centre for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR), University of the Punjab, Lahore. Dr. Shirazi graduated in 1987 from the Department of Geography, University of the Punjab, Lahore with First Class obtained Roll of Honour. He also has a post-graduate diploma in Demography from the Social Sciences Research Centre and a Degree (Geography and Political Sciences) from the University of Punjab, Lahore.  He was awarded PhD degree by the University of Karachi-Karachi in 2011. He completed his post-doctorate fellowship (funded by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan) in 2014 from the Institute of Geography, Department of Urban Ecology, Humboldt University, Berlin-Germany. In 2017, he was awarded DAAD Research Stay for Academics and Scientists for a 3-month fellowship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and he completed his second Post-Doctorate from the Institute of Geography, Humboldt University, Berlin-Germany. He remained a member and Secretary National Curriculum Revision Committee of Geography and Disaster Management. His overall teaching experience in Degree and Post-graduate classes is about 36 years. Dr. Shirazi was awarded the “Best Teacher Award” twice (based on student’s evaluation) from the PU authorities in 2001 and 2002.  He has supervised and produced 50 MS/MPhil and 11 PhDs in various ramifications of Geography. He has vast experience in project handling and has carried out projects funded by the World Bank, Pakistan Science Foundation, and other funding agencies. He served the Pakistan Geographical Association (PGA) as Secretary, Vice President, and President and is a member of various academic bodies in and outside Pakistan. He has authored and co-authored more than 80 research papers, 4 book chapters, and 5 books published in Pakistan and abroad. He remained the Editor, of the Pakistan Geographical Review (PGR), the only HEC-recognised journal on the subject of Geography. Dr. Shirazi is well-versed in organizing conferences, seminars, and workshops within the scope of Geography. His research interests included climate change, landscape ecology, ecosystem services, the morphology of cities, desertification and resilience, urbanization, and sustainability.
